The Athletic Bands Coordinator/Color Guard Director will serve as principal administrative support staff and Band Coordinator for the Towson University Athletic Band program which includes the "World Famous" Towson University Marching Band, Pep Bands, Indoor Color Guard and other related programs. Additionally, this position will serve as Director of Color Guard Programs. Position requires non-standard working hours including required work on some evenings and weekends. 

Responsibilities and Duties

Fulfill university administrative procedures and support internal processes and systems of the athletic band program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of the program budget and financial systems: pay invoices and bills, generate quarterly reports, transfer funds between accounts including interface with the Provost's Budget Office, University Budget Office, and the Towson University Foundation. 
  • Marching band event planning: develop itineraries, make travel arrangements, and order food.
  • Scheduling: maintain a database of band personnel, oversee attendance, and book campus facilities.
  • Communication: publish a quarterly band newsletter, manage social media accounts, and communicate with students/parents/volunteers/staff/etc.
  • Lead role in organizing and administrating a summer marching arts camp for high school students.
  • Handle day to day office operations: order supplies, maintain office equipment, and organize physical and digital filing systems.
  • Serve as ancillary support to the department of music on an if/when needed basis.
  • Supervise student employees including time sheet management and approval.

Oversee all elements of a contemporary guard program including the marching band season and a competitive winter guard program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Administrative: manage guard membership/rosters, equipment inventory/maintenance, and general logistics for the indoor and outdoor color guard programs. 
  • Design: show programming, equipment/choreography design, and guard flag/uniform design.
  • Educational: leading the guard educational process/teaching staff, developing lesson plans, and developing equipment/movement technique.
  • Nurture the community and culture within the color guard program.
  • Manage budget allocations appropriately.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the position.
  • Display a high level of collegiality in working with diverse faculty, staff, and student constituents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and autonomously in a high-energy and high-stakes environment.
  • Excellent problem solving skills. 
  • Bachelor's Degree minimum required. 
  • At least 3 seasons of teaching experience as a color guard instructor or director. Ideally, this individual will also have marching and/or teaching experience in DCI, DCA, WGI, and/or other competitive color guard circuits.
  • Professional experience with event planning.
  • Evidence of strong teaching skills in modern color guard and marching arts pedagogy.
  • Evidence of strong student-centered practices and positive interactions with student stakeholders in classroom and non-classroom environments.
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills along with strong communication skills. This individual should be detail oriented to ensure accuracy of work. 
  • Evidence of a positive and professional demeanor and being someone who is capable of collaborating well with others.
  • The ability to learn and master new digital systems, databases, and programs. 
  • The ability to work in physically demanding conditions such as the heat, sun, and being on your feet for extended periods of time.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in marching arts or a closely related field(s) desired.  
  • Prior experience managing a program budget and financials.
  • Experience running day-to-day operations of an organization in an administrative capacity.

Salary and Benefits

Targeted Hiring Range is $57,000 - $60,000 and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
